Spurs announced on Friday that Vinai Venkatesham will join the club's board as chief executive officer in the summer. This may well be good news for Tottenham Hotspur Women.
The Guardian's Tom Garry tweeted that "Vinai Venkatesham was a strong supporter of women's football at Arsenal and when you have somebody with that respect for the women's game as your CEO, it naturally impacts on the culture, club-wide."
Changing Infrastructure Behind Spurs Women
Spurs Women's manager Robert Vilahamn has frequently mentioned the impending arrival of a technical director. He clearly thinks some work on the infrastructure behind the team needs to happen in order for the side to move forward. This appointment could be another step in the right direction.
Let's deal with the other issue that is highlighted by Garry's tweet. Venkatesham previously was CEO at Arsenal. At a time when Spurs fans are feeling... frustrated... at the club's leadership, it's a risky move for them to bring someone in so associated with a hated rival. (It will obviously not be an issue at all if Venkatesham helps guide the men's and women's sides to success!)
Commenting on his appointment, Vinai Venkatesham said:
“I’m excited to be joining Tottenham Hotspur this summer. After taking some time to recharge and evaluate my options, I believe this is an exceptional opportunity to work with Daniel, the Board and all of the staff, to take the Club forward.”
Spurs Executive Chairman, Daniel Levy said:
“The Club has experienced significant growth in recent years, making it crucial to expand our executive management. I have known Vinai for many years, having worked together in the Premier League and the ECA. I am personally delighted that he has agreed to join our Board as we build for success.”
It would not take a lot of investment to make a very big difference.
WSL Break
It's been a long break since Tottenham Women last played. The team had a number of players out on international duty. Jess Naz was eventually called up for the Lionesses. There is still some confusion about the situation with Haley Raso. She flew to Australia during the WSL game against Leicester. She was found to be injured upon joining up with the Matilda's.
The team are not back in action until Sunday, 20th April when they face Aston Villa in the Women's Super League. That game is at Brisbane Road and kicks-off at 2pm.
