Tottenham vs Man City Post-match Musings: A Missed Opportunity

Another game against a big side, another defeat for Tottenham Hotspur Women. who were beating 1-2 by Man City on Sunday. It was a pretty good, competitive performance from Spurs, but it felt like a missed opportunity to get at least a point against one of the teams above them.

Despite making a bright start to the game and being the better side, Spurs still fell behind after 10 minutes. Turns out leaving Viv Miedema Miedema unmarked in the box doesn't end that well. What was better this time than in recent weeks is that Robert Vilahamn's team didn't wilt after conceding. They deservedly got back into the game through a smart Bethany England finish on 37 minutes. (Are you watching Sarina?)

The defeat came courtesy of a lovely goal by Aoba Fujino just before the hour. From the press gantry, it looked like a previous header from Miedema had crossed the line too. There were some missed chances by Spurs, including from England with pretty much the last kick of the game, something Vilahamn acknowledged post-match.

Spurs Bulk up

With Eveliina Summanen and Drew Spence back in the middle, Spurs were a bit stronger than in the last few games, with the pressing better too. No wonder the manager said his emotions were "mixed" after the final whistle. As well as acknowledging the contribution of the two midfielders, Vilahamn thought Charlotte Grant, playing on the wing not at fullback, was "brilliant" after being brought in for her pace. Hopefully the Aussie will get some more opportunities moving forward.

It's a bit of a shame that Tottenham Women don't have a game this weekend. They may well have built on some of the positive aspects from Sunday's performance with a quick turnaround. As it is, they have to wait two weeks before facing Brighton at home. Having lost six games in a row in all competitions, getting a result in that match is essential to stop the rot.
