Leicester vs Tottenham Women on Sunday, 30 March, 2025 gives the visitors an opportunity to break out of an utterly dismal run of form. Spurs have not won a game in any competition since that last gasp victory over Crystal Palace back on January 26.
In many ways, the problem facing Robert Vilahamn's side is simple. Nobody scores in open play apart from Bethany England. Bethany England is injured. However, we all know that there were issue before the skipper strained her squad. A lack of creativity and a leaky defence is not a good combination. Spurs have only scored 20 goals in their 17 matches so far and have a goal difference of -16.
And just because it is obvious what the problem is, it doesn't mean the solution is equally as apparent. Maite Oroz provides some class in midfield but had to be removed at half time with an injury in the previous mach against West Ham. (She should be fit for this game.) She doesn't have the physicality though and needs enforcers around her.
Despite Martha Thomas's terrible goalscoring form of late, it looks like she will remain in the centre-forward position. Vilahamn siad he thinks his forward is "so close to score now, so probably Martha will start as a nine." Her physical presence at the top of the pitch is important and nobody could ever doubt her workrate, but the Scot needs to offer more of a cutting edge.
Even with all these issues, Vilahamn is clearly in no mood for giving up. He described himself as "a problem solver" in his pre-match press conference on Friday.
Ella Emerges For Tottenham Women
One of the bright spots in recent weeks has been the emergence of Ella Morris. The fullback is physically strong and clearly an intelligent, creative player. She was one of the clear sources of potential goals against West Ham last time out. Ahead of this weekend's game, Vilahamn said: "When she have a few games on the run and you can tell her potential, then it's having a big impact on us."
Spurs were extremely lucky to win the reverse fixture a couple of months ago. How Robert Vilahamn and his team could do with such luck now.
